What Should You Do If You Have to Drive Through Standing Water on the Road?

In light of the severe flooding in Louisiana, all drivers should review what to do should they find themselves on water-covered roads. We should all avoid driving through standing water, even as little as 12 inches can sweep vehicles away, and roads are easily damaged and known to collapse under the duress of water.

However, sometimes there are no alternate routes and through the water is the only way to safety. If you find yourself in a situation like this, following these tips will help keep you and your passengers safe:

  • Pay attention to the other drivers in an effort to estimate the depth of the water. Note where the water rises on the other vehicles, and proceed accordingly.
  • Fallen trees or other large debris traveling downstream can crush or trap you. Anticipate what's coming downstream.
  • Drive steadily, trying not to brake as this may stall your engine.
  • If there are downed electrical lines in the water, avoid driving through.
  • Waters rise quickly, and if you find yourself unable to control the car any longer, GET OUT! If you can't open your door, roll down the window. Head to higher ground immediately.

Always listen to local news broadcasts for important information regarding flood-prone areas, and avoid them when possible. Never ignore barricades or signs directing you away from standing water on the roadways. Stay safe!
