Vehicle Organization Features

As our daily lives grow busier, our free time continues to dwindle... the more important simplicity and organization become higher priorities for many families.  Today, there is a product to organize just about everything.  And, car makers have taken notice and brought vehicle organization to a whole new level. The cup holders of the past are no longer!  The star features of a vehicle; today's cars boast everything from multipurpose consoles that hold laptops to customizable storage modules and rubberized compartments that can be hosed down.  There are many varieties of features to be found that will help a family stay organized, at least while in the vehicle.  Here are some of the great innovations that are being offered on new cars.

Overhead consoles

Overhead storage space provides practical and convenient organization that's accessible by all passengers. Some examples of new styles include "airplane style" overhead consoles with storage bins, air vents, lights, and up to two 8-inch DVD entertainment screens.  The Chevrolet Uplander minivan has an overhead rail system that offers unique interior customization - handy storage modules for small items may be snapped in where desired.  One of the Uplander options is the PhatNoise 40-gig digital media system that stores thousands of songs and dozens of movies.  Lighting, HVAC controls and rear-seat DVD entertainment are also built into the system. Chrysler minivans also use the sliding overhead rail system with two movable storage bins.

Multipurpose center consoles

Center consoles have gone high tech. The Lincoln MKX midsize crossover SUV offers a customized area to hold CDs, cell phones, or a laptop computer. A 12-volt power plug charges electronics, and an available auxiliary audio input for MP3 players makes music availability convenient.  Some vehicles also have slots in the side of the console for organizing the routing of power cords.  You can also find separate center compartments for the driver and passenger, some even come with a folding tray, and a console that can be removed from the front and placed between the middle seats.

Special features

Some of these organization perks go beyond the ordinary. In some vehicles, you will find a partially exposed Lazy Suzan (rotating storage tray) beneath the passenger floor. Also, retractable dry-cleaning hooks, and retractable cup holder covers. Storage nets in some vehicle foot wells keep small cargo in place. And some even have a phone outlet built into the front armrest.

Glove boxes

These are not just ordinary little cabinets anymore. Dual boxes are being incorporated into more of today's vehicles. Some are now opened electronically, illuminated, and two-tiered.

Enhanced cargo loading/organization

There are now special tailgates which allow for easier loading of large or heavy cargo. And cargo organizers, with separate storage bins, are becoming standard.  The Dodge Nitro's "Load 'N Go" rear sliding storage tray takes it one further: it extends 18 inches beyond the rear bumper for simple cargo loading and unloading.  Some SUVs are finishing their cargo area with easily washable materials, such as a urethane-coated utility floor. Waterproof seating upholstery is also on the rise.

Super seat configuration

Minivans and SUVs of today have seating that can be moved, folded, and even disappear into the floor.  Some seats split 50/50, while some split 60/40.  Basically what this does is offer more options with the cargo/passenger balance. Many vehicles are offering cargo management systems, with specific storage areas in each part of the vehicle.

Having a vehicle that is simple to organize is a relief to many, as it is one less thing to worry about in their busy lives.  Although car organization may never overcome safety, fuel consumption, and drivability as a priority for car buyers, it certainly deserves a consideration.
